WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?
ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is a systematic approach which ensures that the production, for whichever sector, is carried out taking into account all environmental impacts in every step of production from start to finish. ISO 14001 is an international standard that defines the inspection, controlling and improving (i.e. the process) of the environmental performance of a company.
The management system developed to systematically reduce and -if possible- to eliminate any damage or harm that an organization inflicts or might inflict on the environment is designated as the Environmental Management System.
WHAT IS ISO 14001 STANDARD?
*ISO 14000 family of standards is an Environmental Management Standard developed by ISO Technical Committee TC207. This series of standards is designed to comprehend all environmental aspects related to organizations, and it serves as basis for the organizations to prioritize environmental impacts, as well as to manage and control them.
*ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is a management model based on risk analyses, which essentially aims to reduce the use of natural resources, and to minimize any possible damages to land, water and air.
*Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 14001 series of standards defines the establishment of a system that ensures the determination of environmental factors throughout the production process from raw material to finished product and that enables to minimize any damages to the environment by taking aforementioned factors under control through the implementation of necessary inspections and precautions.
*ISO 14001 is not a product standard, but a system standard, and it deals with how a product is made rather that what is produced. It is based on monitoring and continuous improvement of environmental performance. The standard stipulates that any applicable legislation and laws -and provisions thereto- related to environmental factors are to be complied with.
*It is a well-known fact that our resources are not infinite, and environmental impacts of products and operations are not local/regional but global. Developed with this fact in mind, ISO 14001 is a management system that aims to protect environmental features and natural structure.
*ISO 14001 standard constitutes the basis for more efficient management of risks and opportunities related to the environment, and intends to minimize the environmental damage inflicted by the activities of industrial organizations and to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials.
*ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized standard related to Environmental Management Systems, and serves as a guide for more efficient management of environmental aspects of an organization’s activities, products and services.
*Organizations that establish Environmental Management Systems in compliance with ISO 14001 standard ensure that natural resources are not consumed and polluted, or such adverse impacts are minimized; and thus they are regarded as environmentally friendly and trustworthy companies.
ISO 14001 Sections:
– General requirements,
– Environmental policy,
– Planning,
– Implementation and Operation,
– Corrective and preventive actions,
– Management review.
Commitment and Policy: The organization should establish an environmental policy and commit to comply with the environmental management system.
Planning: The organization should determine the environmental aspects related to its activities, products and services, and select those of importance. It should set aims and goals to fulfil its commitments, and plan the activities to achieve such aims and goals.
Implementation and Operation: The organization should develop a support mechanism, with necessary means and facilities, to be able to make relevant implementations efficiently to improve its environmental policy and to achieve its aims and goals.
Inspection and Corrective Action: The organization should measure, monitor and evaluate its environmental performance and its level of success.

Stored materials, if any, are kept %10 moist on the top layer by sprinkling regularly using the watering equipment in the facility.
Due care is taken to avoid scattering during loading and unloading operations.
Scrapyard is covered on its sides and top to prevent dust emissions to the atmosphere that might be generated during loading, unloading and handling.
***WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
Wastewater:
Domestic and industrial wastewater is generated in the melting facility of Yeşilyurt Demir Çelik End. Ve Liman İşl. A.Ş. and it is exempt from the Environmental Permission on Domestic and Industrial Wastewater. Such wastewater is disposed of -via interconnected piping- to Samsun Organized Industrial Site Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Process Wastewater:
Municipal water provided by Sakarya Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKİ) is used as the process (cooling) water in the melting facility. Municipal water consumption of the facility is approximately 1900 m3/day. Cooling water is required for the process. The system is a closed circuit and the water used in the process is reutilized after being cooled. Melting facility includes untreated water, open, closed and recycling water tanks. The water from these tanks, which is mostly vaporized after the process due to high temperatures, is used by spraying in order to cool steel as well as to remove dirt and iron oxide dross from steel. Municipal water is firstly passed through water softening plant, and then conveyed to the untreated water tank to consequently be used in the process. After being used in the process the water is conveyed to the settling tank, where particulates in it are settled, and then fed back to the system. Water that is continuously circulated and sprayed to cool steel is discharged once a year in an amount of approximately 1200 ton/year from the outlet of settling tank to the sewerage of the Organized Industrial Site.
Domestic Wastewater:
Domestic wastewater (office, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, etc.) are discharged to the sewerage of the Organized Industrial Site.
Scrapyard Seepage Water
Scrap materials could get wet while being transported to the site, which could cause seepage water. By benefiting from the inclination of the site, seepage water is collected.
Such wastewater is discharged to the sewerage of the Organized Industrial Site.
Other wastewater and rainwater
No wastewater is generated from garden irrigation or water used for sweeping and sprinkling of factory site for dust prevention.
Drainage grates are installed at certain locations around the scrapyard in order to prevent rainwater entering the site according to the physical requirements to be met for Non-hazardous Waste Recycling License. Moreover, rainwater received on the facility site is discharged to V-type channels installed to outlet rainwater from the Organized Industrial Site to the Black Sea.
***NOISE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
Our facilities are exempt from the Environmental Permission concerning Noise, since they are located within the Organized Industrial Site. However, to reduce the impact of noise generated by our activities and to take it under control, noise measurements are carried out as stipulated under Measurement Procedures concerning Environment, Occupational Health and Safety, according to the Regulation on Evaluation and Management of Environmental Noise.
